A Community Says Goodbye to a K-9 Hero Before It Underwent Euthanasia

We know at least one or two people who have been given honor or even a hero’s farewell. Today’s story is a bittersweet one as a community said goodbye to a K-9 hero named Judge. He was given a hero’s farewell last February 20, 2015 before he underwent euthanasia.

Judge is a 9-year-old German Shepherd  that started serving West Deptford Township in 2007. According to Gloucester County Online, Judge was deployed over 280 times as a police dog in different crime cases. Around 152 people were arrested with the help of Judge. The K-9 also had numerous interactions with the community in public events.

However in 2013, Judge had to retire early because of some teeth problems. Last June 2014, Judge suffered several health issues like vomiting, hair loss, and bloating, until he was diagnosed with Cushing’s disease. His health deteriorated uncontrollably and started to have nosebleeds in September of 2014.

By November 2014, Judge already had masses in his liver and testicles and his intestines were already blocked.

Before West Deptford Township gave their farewell to Judge, the K-9’s liver was already too enlarged crowding his stomach, thus, preventing him to eat. His disease was taking a toll on his health and quality of life that they had to make a medical decision to euthanize him.

Police officers and police dogs lined up the streets while Judge was escorted by Cpl. Michael Franks. Judge marched carrying his favorite toy, “the sleeve”, which made Judge become motivated to walk again according to Franks. Veterinary staff at the St. Francis veterinary clinic also lined up to pay respects to Judge.
